If a mother knows that she will be supported and helped during her pregnancy and beyond, she may be less reluctant to have the baby. Adoption, which can be an emotional decision for a new mother, should be accessible and encouraged, especially if the mother is considering abortion later in the pregnancy. Many pro-life advocates have been criticized for not supporting child and infant care after birth, as if they only care for the unborn. Joycelyn Elders, former U.S. surgeon general, says, "We really need to get over this love affair with the fetus and start caring about children."
