Topic > Youth Culture Leads to Moral Decay - 1487

According to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), when a child matures into adulthood, he or she is considered young. Young people undergo psychological and physiological changes that occur during the different period of adolescence and post-adolescence, where it usually occurs during puberty and ends when one is around the age of 20 (Fornäs, 1994, p. 3). Youth is the period when young people develop significant characteristics that lead to a better understanding of themselves that would last throughout their lives (Willis cited in Siân, 2012, p. 5). By way of illustration, Hebdige, (as cited in Siân, 2012, p. 5) conducted research on how different subcultures use symbols to indicate their group loyalty in the sense of clothing, hairstyles, makeup and material embellishments such as motorcycles . Frith (as cited in Siân, 2012, p. 5) suggests that the way one conducts one's life fully based on defined values and purposes that are unique to those young people who are experiencing them is in line with the definition of culture youth. Subsequently, Siân (2012), believes that young people are unstable during adolescence. With youth culture, young people have a great avenue to convey their feelings through exploring different cultural outlets. Second, it allows young people to have a sense of belonging and purpose if they cannot find it in other social structures such as school, family and home. To conclude, youth culture can lead to both moral values and moral decline. I am inclined to think that youth culture causes the moral decay of young people. They are mainly shaped by mass media, followed by peer pressure. Moral decay in young people is primarily shaped by the mass media. Mass communication......at the center of the paper......among young people. (February 26, 2011). Towards TobaccoFree Singapore.
