The story of "A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings" was initially written in 1955 and characterized by a style called "magical realism". This style is also linked to its author, Gabriel Garcia Márquez. Magical realism integrates real, everyday details with fictional features. It is done in such a way that it can mask the difference between reality and fiction. This style, often associated with South American authors, differs from typical fairy tales and popular legends because magical realism stories do not lead to a clear moral. Magical realism does not “invent a new order of things but simply [reorders] reality” (Wechsler 293). These stories provide meticulous examples of a world with magical perspectives, but often leave the reader searching for its meaning. “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings” is definitely that story. Although the plot is mainly about a winged man who fell from the sky, the highlight of this story is the negative nature of people contrasted with their inability to be grateful for a miracle. This story is full of images. to reveal the negativity of human nature. Marquez brilliantly hinted at some details to capture it. The story begins by describing the setting as very dark and miserable, “the sea and sky were one ash grey” (269) and “the sands had become a stew of mud and rotten shellfish” (269). These symbols served as props to show the cruelty and negative atmosphere that the people of the city had. Even though the winged man was very different, it was clear that he meant no harm. He never exhibited any type of harmful behavior, so there was no reason for him to be locked in a cage and treated that way. The angel has been kept in the chicken coop and has been “unnoticed or pushed aside by the broom… middle of the paper… or something that greatly benefits their life, but still decides to treat them terribly.” Very Old Man with Enormous Wings", the moral is that people should keep their eyes open for miracles and not be so quick to judge, harm and take advantage of those who are different. Furthermore, people should not be so trapped in making part of this world to miss the “magical” things that appear in everyday life “Magical realism is said to offer a wide range of physiological effects, although it was caught, so to speak, between realism and surrealism” ( Wechsler 294). Yes, something is not of this world, but people should always keep an open mind to the imagination, otherwise the opportunity for a gift or blessing can easily slip through their fingers people never know who or when God will send to test their genius, their faithfulness, and their abilities..
