When someone sits on a realist/internationalist scale, they dictate what they think about the use of unilateral force. Because the issue is so politicized, it is difficult to determine when to use unilateral force. A realist who believes in an anarchic international system would most likely prefer to use unilateral force whenever possible. This contrasts with what liberal internationalists might think, as they would most likely prefer to work multilaterally to solve a problem. Since the end of World War II, however, the United States has, for the most part, acted unilaterally with respect to resolving international conflicts.
