Topic > The Field of Human Service - 1535

The field of human service can be challenging for people at times and rewarding at other points in one's career as well. What exactly is the field of human services? According to the National Human Services Organization, they report that “the field of Human Services is broadly defined, uniquely approaching the goal of meeting human needs through an interdisciplinary knowledge base, focusing on prevention and problem solving , and maintaining a commitment to improving the overall quality of life of service populations” (NOHS, 2009). Human services professionals are responsible for many tasks throughout their professional positions. Part of what is required of a human services worker would be an understanding of the individual, family and community he or she is serving, respect for the diversity that we have, and the ability to make professional judgments whenever necessary. Now, Reamer (2006) lists those keys to social work practice that I find to be where I like to walk the path and that I was just talking about above. These include the following “commitment to improving well-being and helping to meet the basic human needs of all people, client empowerment, services to vulnerable and oppressed people, attention to individual well-being in a social context, promotion of social justice and social policies". change and sensitivity to cultural and ethnic diversity” (p. 49-51) Human service workers must also possess other qualities to successfully complete their position in this career. Some of these are but are not included; effective listening and communication, effective organizational skills and good working relationships with others. As I considered Reamer (2006), continues… halfway through the paper… potential benefits and risks for each” (2006, p. 73). Next, you will examine and determine what the reasoning is behind what just happened. “What happened when you took action? To what extent did your action produce the intended consequences? To what extent, if at all, were there unintended consequences? Knowing what you know now, you would have acted the same way or chosen a different response to the situation” http://kspope.com/memory/ethics.php. Once you've done this, you may want to consult another colleague or an expert of some kind to handle this information and get some advice. Then you can decide where to go from this point forward. Once the decision has been made there must be documentation to archive. The last thing that needs to happen is to monitor, evaluate and then document the decision.
