Introduction/General InformationTaiga is a biome native to northern Russia that means or describes a large, cool land with many coniferous trees. Upper North America, Northern Europe, and Northern Asia are all primarily Taiga. It is the largest biome and contains mostly conifers but does not have many animals. The climate is mostly very cold and snowy in winter and warm in summer, while autumn and spring are just transitional seasons. Plants Plants in the Taiga are important because most of the land is made up of dense conifers. In the Taiga there are acres, sometimes kilometers, of plants of the same species. Plants adapt to climate, so not all plants can thrive or survive, so there is not a huge variety of plants. Spruce and hemlock are the most abundant trees in the Taiga, and some deciduous trees include poplar, birch, and aspen. Evergreens have special adaptations in their shape that help support them when it snows. Tamaracks are one of the few non-evergreen trees that lose their leaves and life in the Taiga. Animals The climate in the Taiga makes it difficult to find food and life in general, so in winter animals migrate, hibernate or simply deal with the harsh climate. Most major birds are not threatened, such as the Bohemian Waxwing, Pine Grosbeak, Red-throated Grebe, and Hawk Owl. The Bohemian Waxwing feeds mainly on fruit and creates dense nests in tall conifers unlike the hawk owl which nests in hollow tree stumps or abandoned nests and eats small mammals which it hunts during the day. The red-throated loon nests mostly in conifers with a seed-based diet, and the red-throated loon has a fish-based diet because it spends most of its time in water. Mammals include the ermine; a weasel-like animal in which...... in the center of the card......iomi of the Earth: Taiga. New York City: Chelsea House, 2006. Print.Unknown. ". Mrnagribianko-ecozone.
