INTRODUCTION Time management is a skill that helps you achieve your goals and is essential both in and out of the workplace. Good time management allows you to do the following: • Evaluate your priorities – This way you can identify what needs to be done and how it compares to other tasks and puts you in a position to set priorities. • Set goals – By setting realistic goals you can achieve goals and manage them accordingly. • Organize time – Allow appropriate time to complete tasks and use it effectively. The importance of effective time management is not just about you, others will also feel the benefit of your behavior. This will be reflected in your organization, good productivity and less stress. TIME MANAGEMENTGood time management Time management is important not only to reduce stress, but also to enable you to work more effectively, not only for yourself but for those around you, including your personal and home life. Here are some examples of good time management: • Set clear goals • Prioritize your workload • Make lists of tasks • Review your workload as it changes The benefits of good time management are: • Get more done less time • Reduces stress • Keep you focused • Others learn from your example • Helps with self-discipline • Forces you to do tasks you might otherwise avoid Poor time management • Trying to do everything at once • Postponing meetings or activities • Not prioritizing workload • Multitasking The disadvantages of poor time management are: • Increased stress/frustration • Deemed unapproachable • Poor quality work • Low esteem/motivation MY STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES STRENGTHS • One thing I've always done is make lists of tasks. This is something I do both inside and out… middle of the paper… because this can make problems seem much bigger than they really are. By sharing these feelings you will feel relief in bringing problems out into the open. AVAILABLE SUPPORT Support can come from inside and outside the workplace. Here are some examples of each: • Manager – This can be done either formally or informally, but will depend on the relationship you have with the manager. • Colleagues – Sharing thoughts with colleagues can be a good source of support as they are likely to be empathetic. • Union – The union will be able to support and have access to professional bodies. • Training – This can help you recognize stress and how to manage it in the early stages. • Family/Friends – Can listen for support and advise in the situation.• Doctors: Experienced professionals who can assist in many ways.• Helplines: Samaritans are available at any time for support.
