Topic > The Power of Money - 711

Money is what makes the world go round. We work for money. We earn by spending money. We live because of money. However, some of us have more than others. What should we do with the excess money we have? Peter Singer, professor of bioethics, believes that "money spent on luxury goods, not on basic necessities, should be donated." He believes people should donate to aid organizations abroad, so they can recognize the urgent need for food and medicine in many parts of the world. Donating offers many benefits to the donor and the donee, but sometimes giving has its limits. Personally, donating abroad is a blessing, but donations should be made to our people. On the one hand, giving is a grateful thing. It allows us to recognize the blessings we have and recognize the difficulties others may have. Some Americans have a plethora of luxuries. A classic example of this would be Jay Gatsby. Jay Gatsby, a millionaire, was a character in the novel The Great Gatsby. He didn't donate his money for the common good. He spent everything on an extraordinary villa and extravagant parties. However, this is not the real world. Our world is made up of materialistic things. Do we all really need more televisions, more smartphones and numerous computers? There are families and people in the world who cannot afford basic food, shoes, clothing, housing and healthcare. The least we can do is donate some gently used clothes and shoes, non-perishable food and essentials. Donating is not just a moment of fulfillment; it gives us a sense of humanity. We all have a part in us that does something good. Imagine a feeling of genuine happiness because you just gave a little boy in Nicaragua a… middle of paper… from people walking by. Every city has its struggles. The city I live in nearby, Milwaukee, is considered one of the poorest cities. Although the circumstances between the homeless here and the homeless around the world are different, they both still struggle. We can do something for the people who live near us. We don't have to just give; we can act. We can volunteer at a local soup kitchen. We can raise awareness and take a stand for change. Helping is a blessing, so why not help those who live in the same city as us? Peter Singer is sending a heartfelt message. We all have the kindness to help someone in need. Donation can have its weaknesses. However, the investment can be made from time to time. This investment can help not only those struggling overseas, but also those struggling across the city.
