Charismatic Approach Words that automatically come to mind when you think of "charismatic" include charmer, talker, and persuader. “Charismatic leadership” was rarely studied before the 1980s (Clawson, 2012, p. 414). The three charismatic theories explored are House's charismatic leadership theory, charismatic attribution theory, and self-concept theory of charismatic leadership. These three theories attempt to describe the measures, traits, behaviors, and processes of charismatic leadership, which attracts followers and compels them to blindly trust and follow. Charismatic leadership is “a relationship between a leader and his or her followers” (Ehrhart & Klien, 2001). HouseR's theory of charismatic leadership. J. House presented one of the first well-known publications on charismatic leadership, “A 1976 Theory of Charismatic Leadership”. This theory studied the relationship between a charismatic leader and an individual follower. House's theory outlined the measures, behavior, and capabilities of a charismatic leader. One measure is the charismatic leader's focus on the follower's trust in the leader and the similarities of the follower's beliefs to those of the leader. This trust and similarity in the follower's beliefs allows the follower to identify with the leader, which makes the follower feel an emotional involvement as “one” in the leader's mission. The follower's affection for the leader pushes him to accept the leader's beliefs without question. This emotional involvement increases the follower's performance goals and increases their level of trust.
