CITI Course and Ethics PaperIn 1982 the Johnson & Johnson company recalled 31 million bottles of Tylenol from store shelves after eight people in the United States died from cyanide-laced capsules. The recall cost Johnson & Johnson $240 million and slashed its profits by nearly 50 percent on five billion dollars in revenue in 1982. Although the tampering was not blamed on the company, Johnson & Johnson decided to act before you have complete information about the entire unfortunate situation. As a result, Tylenol product containers have been redesigned and new tamper-evident packaging has been introduced. The company's immediate response to the problem saved the Tylenol brand and won the company rave reviews for its immediate action and moral and ethical prowess. The move proved to be a huge marketing coup for the company that led to significant goodwill from customers (Seglin, 2000). Johnson & Johnson's ethical practice has proven to be an excellent guide, demonstrating the imperative to be socially and ethically responsible for the lives of others. With respect to research, it is the researcher's moral obligation to be good stewards of those who participate. as part of their research studies and have an obligation to keep them safe.
