What is an exhibition? According to the Cambridge Dictionary, it is "an event in which objects such as paintings are shown to the public, a situation in which someone displays a particular skill or quality to the public, or the act of showing such things."Great Exhibition of the works of industry of all nations"The enormous applause, the joy expressed in every face, the vastness of the building, with all its decorations and exhibits, the sound of the organ... all this was truly moving." - (Queen Victoria,1851)What would be the first exhibition in Britain began on 1 May 1851, following in the footsteps of the French, celebrating industrial technology and design around the world. The Exhibition took place in the now destroyed Crystal Palace, Hyde Park, London and lasted until 15 October of the same year. It was designed by Prince Albert, Henry Cole, Francis Henry, George Wallis, Charles Dilke and other members of the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce and opened by Queen Victoria. The catalog of the Great Exhibition included exhibits from Great Britain and its colonies, as well as 44 other European and American countries.
