The Art of War written by Sun Zi is the world's first book of war tactics. Almost every war in ancient China would apply the tactics described in The Art of War. In the period of the Chu-Han War, which was a famous historical incident that led to the founding of the Han Dynasty, many tactics of The Art of War were widely used. The tactics in The Art of War greatly influenced the success and failure of the Chu-Han War. Liu Bang and his strategists applied the strategies well during the war, so he ultimately won the war. Xiang Yu, in some cases, did not follow the war tactics that led to his failure. This essay will use as examples some famous Chu-Han incidents described in the Shiji chapters, and then tie the tactics to the Art of War. The essay will first analyze the tactics used by Liu Bang and his strategists that can lead to the success of the war and see how it relates to the Art of War. He will then elaborate on some successful tactical uses in Xiang Yu's The Art of War. Finally he will analyze some of Xiang Yu's tactical problems that could lead to his failure. Liu Bang did not win many battles in the Chu-Han War, but he eventually defeated Xiang Yu and became the first emperor of the Han Dynasty. It is not only for his brilliant leadership, but also for his careful use of tactics and strategies to gain advantages in war. The most famous episode in which Liu Bang gained advantages before the war was the "Hanzhong Plan" (汉中对) carried out by Han Xin, one of Liu Bang's best generals. This famous incident happened when Liu Bang met Han Xin for the first time. Liu Bang was at a disadvantage in the war with Xiang Yu. Han Xin analyzed the flaws in Xiang Yu's character and the strategic status between Chu and Han. He said: “When Xiang Yu meets people it is c...... middle of paper ...... analysis of Chu and Han's tactical condition. He listed XiangYu's disadvantages and predicted that Xiang Yu would be easily defeated. He applied Sun Zi's tactic of "analyzing the condition before the war" in the Chu-Han War and gained a great advantage for Liu Bang in the war. Furthermore, Xiang Yu's role as a general is successful. He used the tactics of The Art of War to attack Liu Bang by surprise and achieved victory in the battle. However, Xiang Yu made many other stratagem errors, failing to adequately reward his officers, and was cruel enough to massacre thousands of them. He was completely against Sun Zi's idea in The Art of War and ultimately lost the war. Therefore, personally, the tactics in The Art of War greatly influenced the success and failure of the Chu-Han War. The side that successfully applied the strategies was more likely to win the war.
