Topic > Standardized testing should be removed in schools…

Washington State school districts should remove standardized testing requirements. Tests taken are not a valid way to showcase a student's full abilities displayed in the classroom. The fact that the tests are all the same and some students have only learned some material because the classes they chose to take in high school don't teach everything that is on the test. Taking these tests is putting a strain on high school students and causing them stress and anxiety. Standardized tests do not allow students to demonstrate how capable they truly are. Washington State school districts should remove tests so that students are able to express their work ethic in a better way than a single test score. The SAT and ACT tests are all tests that every student will most likely have to take, the test is the same for everyone. The test is composed entirely of multiple choice questions, with the exception of the written part of the test. Because the test involves multiple-choice questions, it is not a valid way to showcase a student's knowledge. It's easier to guess an answer or ignore someone else's test when you only have 4 answers to choose from. By letting students express themselves more effectively, Washington State school districts would have more successful students. Asking the student to write down how he or she got a math answer or to explain the reasoning behind what he or she thinks about the passage is a stronger response than choosing A, B, C, or D on a test paper. When they explain why they got the answer they got, they can show how their brains work and what kind of learners they are. The school district should not continue with standardized tests because they do not validly express how a student can perform and what... middle of paper... a 4 hour test on a Saturday morning can completely capture what you have learned and how did you learn it. This is not a fair way for students to show off. School districts in Washington State would continue to negatively impact students by maintaining standardized testing as a requirement. Students need a way to be seen as individuals instead of a test score. A high school transcript is a better way to reveal a student than a test score. Once Washington State school districts realize that the standardized tests they hand out actually harm the student rather than help them, then students may begin to excel more in school. http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2014 /02/11/stress-teens-psychological/5266739/Works Citedhttp://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2014/02 /11/stress-teens-psychological/5266739/
