Literature Review 2.0Nowadays, some of the green management trends exist in the hotel industry. The eco-friendly-profit-friendly idea was interesting and contributed to the support of the Shangri-la Hotel (Shangri-la, 2014). Green management can get the benefits and Malaysian travelers are willing to pay extra for green (Christy, 2014).2.1 The concept of “green” hotels. According to Top Canadian Hotels (2014), “green” hotels are defined as having environmental protection of properties that takes the lead. It is very important that there are plans and practices to reduce the use of natural resources such as water, waste and energy; but not all “Green” hotels have the same practices. This depends on management and hotel regulations, their level of commitment and ability to make a decision. Some “green” hotels will do their best to use as many methods as possible. These may include various recycling programs; for example paper, aluminium, glass and plastic. Linen change programs where linens are changed less than once a day, unless guests request it. When the rooms or area are not in use, the hotel can use motion sensors to save energy for lighting in the hotel. Some of the “green” hotels are trying to send a message to let travelers know how to be greener and let them know that hotels are doing their part to protect the earth. Heisterkamp said backing up green claims is very important by using audits and metrics to ensure credibility. Third-party authentication of statements can help with this. All “green” hotels must obtain LEED (Leader in Energy & Environmental Design) certification for the hotel management plan and cost-saving operations (LEED, 2014).
