To survive in the world, people must be able to earn money from the work they do. Should interns be paid for the work they do at these companies? Internships are often done for a few months at a time, and depending on how many hours students put into their internships, they may not have time to earn extra income while working for free. Technically, most don't work for free; they pay the school for the internship so you can earn academic credit. On the other hand, there are examples of notable people in the film industry who have gained useful knowledge through unpaid internships and gotten their foot in the door of Hollywood. One example is Jonas Rivera, known for his role as a producer on the animated film Inside and Out. Rivera was a student at San Francisco State University when he contacted Pixar to inquire about a job. This led to his unpaid internship working on Toy Story and solidifying his career path within the company from intern, to production assistant, to production manager, to producer.
