Topic > Our "Messed Up" Juvenile Law System - 1034

Nowadays, the topic of the juvenile law system is a very controversial and difficult discussion to have. For every court case, trial, and scenario, there are many different circumstances that can affect the outcome. Due to the severity of their crimes or even past crimes, juvenile criminals may sometimes be tried as adults. Personally, at the beginning of this assignment, I could see both sides of the issue. There are many reasons why children under 18 should be tried as children, however, there are more compelling reasons why we should eliminate juvenile court. Many of my peers do not think so, however, they are eager to keep children tried as children. However, I really can't understand the "good" this is doing. I believe that juvenile delinquents should be tried as adults because they are mature enough to make the decision to commit a crime, they must be held accountable for their destructive actions, and statistics have shown that when given the chance, juvenile criminals do not complete the process the rehabilitation necessary to reintegrate into society. The main reason most of my peers want children to be tried as children is for their safety. I have a simple solution for this though. If they are convicted, they should be taken to a juvenile residential complex. This block should be located within an adult penitentiary, but should be separated from adult offenders. This is primarily for the safety of those who may not be able to defend themselves from older adult inmates. An example of this type of prison is the Wabash Valley Prison located in Terre Haute, Indiana. This correctional facility keeps juvenile and adult inmates in separate buildings. This causes the minor to be… middle of paper… the entire legal system is messed up. And then there are the anarchists. All I have to tell them is to look at the facts. The legal system is certainly not perfect, but without it where would we be? And then there are the anarchists. Honestly, the juvenile system should be diminished. All offenders must be prosecuted against adults. This is the only way we will be able to restore a criminal to being a productive member of society. I'm a kid and many think I would like to keep our system this way, but without my solution, people competent enough to commit a crime will no longer be considered competent at all, criminals will walk away from their crime because they are "too young ” and our young people will continue to disrespect all the rehabilitation opportunities we are offering them. And I tell you that without my system... here are the anarchists.
