Topic > Lord of the Flies by William Golding - 1042

English author William Gerald Golding wrote Lord of the Flies as his first novel in 1954. Golding would later become famous as a novelist, playwright and poet, but before that he lord of the flies publishers of flies had rejected his works several times. Fortunately for Golding and future readers, his new publisher Charles Monteith helped him make some changes to the text and published the book in September 1954 as Lord of the Flies (“William Golding” par.7). This book was a huge success and in 1983 Golding won the Nobel Prize for Literature ("William Golding - Presentation of the prize" par.1). The main characters in this novel are Ralph, Jack, Simon and Piggy. Ralph, who represents the civilizing instinct, is elected leader of the boys' group and tries to promote harmony among them. Even though he tries to lead the group and defeats Jack in the elections, he doesn't try to dominate people. Rather, it focuses on the group's common interest in being saved. For example, it puts the responsibility on hunters to hold a signal fire while trying to establish a shelter. Unlike Ralph, Jack would like to dominate people. This is especially evident when he becomes the leader of the island's hunters. He tends to show other boys how strong and courageous he is while expressing his dominance over them. At the end of the novel, Jack usurps Ralph to become the overall leader, a position in which he demonstrates how barbaric and cruel he can be. While Ralph and Jack struggle against each other, Simon represents a kind of innocent and spiritual human being. Simon was a member of Jack's choir, but unlike the other choir members he chooses not to hunt animals. Rather, he would like to help Ralph build the shelter. Also, Simon is brave... middle of paper... I'm like Ralph, but I can't do anything, I'm just babbling. Piggy is the only one who tells the kids what to do instead of just playing. However, he is disappointed that they don't listen to him, and many boys also get angry and harass him severely. Even at the end of the book, readers don't know what Piggy's real name is. If I were Piggy, I would get very angry and think about what life would be like if I had good health and good eyesight. Jack despises Piggy because of his asthma and his appearance. If he were as skinny as Ralph, I think the other kids would respect Piggy and even want to elect him as their leader. Piggy tries to give lessons to the boys, but since they don't respect him, they mostly ignore him. Furthermore, Piggy may be disappointed in himself because he cannot participate in physical activities such as building the shelter. Therefore, it must be lethargic and solitary.
